About Us

The Chicago Urban Art Society (CUAS) promotes the art makers visual voice.  By way of group or solo exhibitions, innovative teaching + learning opportunities and the creation of an arts + culture archive.

Peter Kepha and Lauren Pacheco were one-half of the 32nd&urban:gallery/space founding team in November 2005. Opening it’s doors on Chicago’s south side community of Bridgeport, 32nd&urban joined the emerging art scene along with Zhou Brothers, Co-Prosperity Sphere (CPS), Artists of East Bank, mn gallery + others.  Urban focused on contemporary art exhibitions featuring local emerging + established talent.

The Chicago Tribune called 32nd&urban “a wedge of serenity and brightness amid a construction zone” + one of the places helping to turn Bridgeport into “a surprise destination for collectors, curators + the curious.”

The Chicago Sun Times said the space was “urban and cutting-edge” + “definitely a breath of fresh air for urbanites.”

New City Chicago suggested that “32nd&Urban Gallery represents some of the newest and freshest homegrown work the city has to offer.  32nd&Urban is special. Since its first show in January 2006, with more than 300 people in attendance, it continues to draw substantial crowds to its (south) South Halsted location.”

The space, a 1,000 square foot former barbershop, complimented by mosaic tile floors + black tin ceiling, quickly found itself hosting Chicago’s hottest local deejay’s, live art artists, + guests ranging from community leaders, curators, gallery owners, local + visiting artists, educators, family +  friends.

After closing its doors in 2008, Lauren + Peter Kepha decided to re-group + form the Chicago Urban Art Society (CUAS), a not-for-profit organization focusing on the artist + the preservation of the Chicago art movement.  CUAS promotes talent and they do this by exposing their creative community to a larger audience.  The organization has big plans to continue supporting + promoting  Chicago’s artists and art makers by launching projects such as: DIY Screen Printing Workshops, Muscle in the Hustle: Contemporary Approaches to Promoting Art, Culture Vulture – Art Reviews with Sara McCool +  Artist Studio Visits (ASV) just to name a few!

Past sponsorships include 312 GooseIsland, Toyota SCION, DogFish Beverages, Pinata Graphics, Miller Brewing Company, etc.
