The Chicago Billboard Project (CBP) is an ambitious art project composed of working artists, art makers, graphic designers, photographers and screen printers. By design, the CBP’s objective is a social and creative examination suggesting a whole new territory of public art. Gone with the liquor, political and clothing advertisements overloading our communities with one-sided or meaningless messages. Our project seeks to reinvent the idea of public art by taking it to the streets (or back to the streets) within a given urban landscape. Identifying a commonality within our neighborhoods the Chicago Urban Art Society (CUAS) encourages art makers to look creatively at billboard space on our buildings, garages, or large-scale metal easels in backyards, off the highway or nearby schools and commercial spaces. This public art effort offers onlookers a different living and viewing perspective when walking, riding or driving.
[ THE PROCESS ]
The Chicago Urban Art Society (CUAS) will identify available billboard spaces available in communities across Chicago-land. We refuse to focus strictly on a particular area and commit ourselves to pinpointing areas of ‘great art need’. G.A.N. locations will be posted online along with the billboard image.
{ Open Call } An open call for designs, concepts and photography will be begin March 1, 2010. If interested you should send us an e-mail to info@chicagourbanartsociety.org with ‘Chicago Billboard Project’ in the subject. We are accepting a project statement proposal. Keep it simple and to your point!
[ YOUR DONATIONS ]
Your KICKSTARTER donations will primarily pay for the costs of monthly billboard time and space. A small portion of the funds raised will go to an official promotional campaign. Billboard rates vary from community to community. On average the costs are $100 – $900 monthly. We hope to launch this project June/July 2010.
